During my travels around the world, I witnessed both the beauty of wildlife and the urgent need to protect it. But in 2023, when I visited the Okavango Delta in Botswana, I discovered something more—I met Dima.
When Dima shared his journey about the obstacles he overcame to become a wildlife guide, I was inspired to tell his story.
At first, it may seem unlikely that Dima, from a small village in Botswana, and I, raised on a remote farm in Nebraska, would form such a deep connection. Yet our lives shared a common thread: we both faced barriers that could have kept us from pursuing our dreams. Our journeys remind us that courage, determination, and belief in yourself know no borders.
Wherever children grow—whether among cornfields or beside wandering elephants—somewhere, a child is watching, learning, and dreaming...and someday, that child, too, will do great things.
One distinction that makes Dima’s story especially compelling is that his “win” is not merely personal success. His dream creates a circle of benefit: Dima → his family → his village → local jobs → wildlife conservation. That community-wide outcome gives the story a conservation and service dimension that many dream-following books lack.
