The term “legacy ” has often been used in a narrow sense, including wealth and material possessions. Recently, I discovered a new expanded meaning that sang to me in the loudest voice. I realized that my writings have already been defined by this broader meaning.

Definition: A person’s legacy is the lasting impact they leave behind after they are gone. Rather than just material wealth, a true legacy encompasses how someone influenced others, the values they modeled, the passions they pursued, and the memories they created in their lifetime. Here are a few key areas that shape this personal legacy:

*Values and Character:The moral compass a person lives by, the kindness they show, and the way they make others feel.
*Knowledge and Lessons:The wisdom, stories, skills, and traditions passed down to family, friends, or a community.
*Impact and Contributions:The difference a person makes through their life's work, creative pursuits, and philanthropy.

My following books are the examples

  • First, there was my “legacy” memoir, In Search of Pink Flamingos, which tells of my life’s journey and service.
  • The second “legacy” marker depicts a Liberia’s 62-year history through the eyes and experiences of 50 authors, ranging in age from 27 to 96. Never the Same Again documents the lasting impact they made on the country and themselves.
  • My upcoming third book, published later this year, This Boy Will Do Great Things, documents the true story of Golekwang Dima Airwa, a young boy from Botswana, and how his passion for becoming a wildlife guide not only saved the animals but his entire community.
  • My forthcoming book will explain the “legacy” of a CARE/USAID Program and my two years in Cameroon serving a population suffering from severe water shortages and a lack of sanitation knowledge.
  • Two more books in the queue include an anthology of short stories and poems, and a collection of my photography. Both will serve as a “legacy” time capsule of my time on this earth.

I will share with you the sweetest handwritten letter I received last week from an admirer who made it clear that the message of “legacy” can come in small packages.

Susan,
I found "Pink Flamingos" at the Goodwill - I loved it!
Several times while reading it I stopped and thanked the Lord for who you were/are.
For many of us, it takes years to acquire the character of your twenty-year-old self.
With Admiration,
Anonymous admirer
YOU ROCK!

This letter, plus all the wonderful reviews and comments I have received over the years, helps me to know I have made this world a better place. Thank you!
