It is now almost 4 weeks since my return from India, and I am having trouble wrapping my head around this complex yet amazing country. I was sent this VIDEO, and within 2.5 minutes, it explained my conundrum.

I have traveled to over 50 countries and lived in 3, but none hold a candle to India’s complexities. I hope you will view this short video and share my response challenge when people ask me, “How was India?” My new response is: India is A Chaotic Wonderland.

I’d love to hear your comments below and share them with our readers. Your full name and email are not shared.

  1. very interesting short video message. I’m sure my 80 year old feet, stomach, ears and more could not handle a visit to India. But I’ve found various films and programs set in India to be fascinating. I suggest you don’t even try to get your head around it as a whole but take the parts with meaning into your psyche however you can. Chaotic wonderland sounds about right.

    1. Hello Janet,

The message in that video is what makes their chaos comforting. They live together in relative harmony, supported by incredible tolerance. They are very kind and helpful people. I have at least two more blogs to write about what I have learned. This experience is in a category of its own. Thanks for commenting.

  2. Hi Susan, thanks for sharing. I loved the video. It humbles me, saddens me and lifts me up…it can be done!

I love the richness of colors and life, wonderful chaos.

    Enjoy the day

    1. Hello Jill,

You clearly identified my struggle to put India in one box. There is no box that it fits into. I must widen my arms to embrace this amazing country. Thanks for commenting and following my journey through life and travel.

  3. Hello Susan,

I spent a LOT of time there on business when we lived in Dubai. In my opinion this video is very kind to/about a country which can and is very unkind to many, many people and completely glosses over the caste system. Though now “illegal” it still thrives for the very wealthy. In a country with way over a billion people there are LOTS of them.

Do not mean to be “Debbie Downer” but was not “my cup o tea”.

    1. Hello Phil,

I always welcome your comments. India seems to have a love-or-hate relationship with those who have been there. Unfortunately, my other readers, who were unable to post their comments (due to technical difficulties), felt differently from you. India is not for everyone. We have much to learn from each other. What years were you there?

My guess is that what I posted is a promotional video. If I think about what the U.S. might make for a similar video. The U.S. would not show its underbelly. I doubt a video would include homelessness, hungry children, or mass shootings. I will be writing about some of the pitfalls of India in upcoming blogs. However, if one looks at India, it is evolving forward. I will also be blogging about those. I found the country fascinating and unique compared to any other country I have travelled to.

      1. Dear Susan,

Thank you for your comments, and I appreciate that you understand that I was simply passing on my thoughts NOT trying to convince. Also, I am so glad that you were able to enjoy your trip there. It is, for sure, a very compelling country rich with many cultures and wonderful people.

        Hope to chat soon.

        Love + Hugs,

    2. Hello Phil,

Responding to your second reply to my comment. Also, we engaged in a wonderful phone call. Yes, your comments are always welcome, which is why I open it up to my readers. You will see in my next blogs about India regarding the transition the country has made in the past 10 years, slow but steady. I think about my own country, the US, and we have made progress, but we have also gone backwards in some areas. This is the chaotic wave we must ride in the U.S. and Indian governments, called democracy.
